Kids Want Cursive!!

IT’S IN THE NEWS!

Recently in one of their issues, Scholastic News posed the question “Should Schools Teach Cursive?”

The article announced Texas’ comeback to teaching cursive; including that by 4rth grade, “Kids will be required to complete some assignments in cursive.” Hats off to Texas!

The article went on to encourage a class debate to see who thought cursive should be taught or not.

In my teacher-friend’s class, it was a unanimous AFFIRMATIVE to teach it! Her students want to learn cursive!!

KIDS WANT CURSIVE…EVEN IN HIGH SCHOOL!

I interviewed a high schooler, newly transferred to a local public high school.

She had learned cursive in her private school, and found that none of her public school peers knew cursive.

She went on to say they wanted to learn how and they questioned why they weren’t taught it in elementary school!

This young lady ended up teaching her friends how to write their signatures!

TEENS WANT THEIR SIGNATURES!

WITH MY OWN EYES!

I hosted my first event with 15+ “after-schoolers” at the local library.

I showed them the cursive alphabet and we talked about its importance!

One 8-year-old knew why it was important…”So you can sign your name!” she shouted out!

After reading my book, The Cursive Letters Revolt!!, to them, my team and I worked with the kids to make “signature necklaces.”

Each child was taught how to sign his/her name in cursive on a sentence strip and then decorated it to put around their neck!

They were THRILLED! Seeing their names in cursive…signing their name…their OWN SIGNATURE!!

One little girl even began to CRY after she had written her name in cursive all by herself! It was a joyful experience, to say the least!

IT’S A WAKE-UP CALL!

In my recent research on cursive, I have found that it is taught in almost all countries except … Here in North America!

It’s sporadically taught and oftentimes, without proficiency.

Hispanic countries VALUE it. In Spain, ONLY cursive is taught!! Young children learn it immediately!

How are we empowering young adults here in the United States to go out and “conquer” the World, if they DON’T KNOW HOW TO READ OR WRITE IN CURSIVE?

I believe if we don’t recapture cursive and bring it back to EVERYONE in this nation, our young people will be at a great disadvantage globally!!

JOIN ME!

Jump in my Cursive Cadillac…”take a ride in my machine”…(it’s Aretha Franklin’s song! LOL!)…and let’s all get the word out on how important cursive is to our Society!!

Technology certainly has its place, but cursive CANNOT be replaced!!

The Cursives have much to say in their book.  Please be their guest and check them out!!
